How do synthesizers actually work — and why is understanding their architecture so valuable if you make electronic music or design sound?
In Part 1 of this Pyramind Synthesizer Architecture Workshop, instructor Quinn Grodzin uses VCV Rack, a virtual modular synthesizer environment modeled on the workflow of Eurorack modular systems, to break synthesis down to its fundamental building blocks.
Rather than simply showing you how to copy a patch or find the right preset, Quinn focuses on understanding what is actually happening inside a synthesizer.
Using a modular environment makes those relationships visible. You can see how sound is generated, how signals move between modules, and how the different building blocks of a synth work together to create an instrument.
### In Part 1, you'll explore:
• The fundamentals of synthesizer architecture
• VCV Rack and modular synthesis concepts
• Audio and signal flow
• Oscillators and sound generation
• Waveforms, pitch and harmonics
• Filters and shaping timbre
• VCAs and amplitude control
• Envelopes and modulation
• How individual synth components interact
• Building sounds from first principles
### Why Learn Synth Architecture?
The goal isn't to memorize one synthesizer.
It's to understand the **language that nearly all synthesizers share**.
Once you understand oscillators, filters, envelopes, VCAs, modulation and signal flow, those concepts begin appearing everywhere — whether you're working with **Serum, Vital, Pigments, Ableton instruments, Moog, Prophet, Eurorack, or countless other hardware and software synths.
Instead of only asking:
“Which preset sounds right?”
You begin asking:
“What does this sound need, and how do I create it?”
That shift is one of the foundations of becoming a better producer and sound designer.
